Gloucester City Circulation and Accessiblity Plan
As part on its ongoing revitalization Gloucester City hired melvin|kernan to evaluate circulation and access on a series of new projects that include redevelopment, a proposed middle school and a new waterfront.  Gloucester City is currently isolated by a variety of major highways that divide parts of the community.  In addition,   Shore Traffic has a way of spilling out of the neighboring highways and adding to local traffic concerns.  The proposed new middle school will further develop Market Street as the School Corridor and the principal way that pedestrian school-age population use to get between a variety of schools.  The study focuses on the Market Street Corridor to provide a safe and pleasant pedestrian experience while providing traffic calming measures.  Additional recommendations are provided for the Broadway Commercial Corridor.  Numerous redevelopment projects are underway that will reclaim the Southport area, once heavy industry and warehousing, to a residential waterfront.  This new neighborhood will be linked by way of a new waterfront boulevard that will serve both the new community and enliven the historic waterfront.   The study addresses connectivity concerns, traffic calming measures, and pedestrian improvements that will allow for an enhanced pedestrian friendly experience.
