  Woolwich Open Space System

In 2002, Woolwich Township became the fastest growing municipality in New Jersey.  Faced with enormous growth pressures and sprawling development patterns, the Township hired melvin|kernan to accommodate projected growth over the next 25 years into a new town center.    The Association of New Jersey Environmental Commissions (ANJEC) has provided a grant for Woolwich Township to study and incorporate techniques that encourage pedestrian and bicycle circulation.  The ongoing project is integrating walkability of a mixed use downtown with a pedestrian/bicycle network friendly to Woolwich, its environs and neighboring municipalities such as Swedesboro. The creation of a bicycle/pedestrian network along the Rt. 322 corridor will not only provide a circulation network within Woolwich but will serve as a linkage to surrounding municipalities. The desire is to encourage an alternate means of transportation to people’s jobs and to children’s schools by creating the opportunity to safely accommodate pedestrians and bicyclists. By achieving this goal we are promoting a healthier environment and a healthier lifestyle for the people of Woolwich.
